Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2025
We built Kairos to help musicians keep time, not to harvest your data. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect (spoiler: not much), how we use it (spoiler: barely), and your rights regarding your data (spoiler: it's yours).
1. Information We Collect
The Short Version: Almost nothing.
Data Stored Locally on Your Device:
- Your tempo preferences
- Time signature settings
- Accent patterns
- Created songs and setlists
- App settings (theme, crossfade preferences, etc.)
- Planning Center login tokens (if you choose to connect)
All of this data stays on your device. We don't have a server. We don't upload your setlists to the cloud. We have no idea what BPM you practice at, and frankly, that's between you and your click track.
Data We Do NOT Collect:
- Your name, email, or contact information
- Your location
- Your browsing history
- Your musical preferences or judgment thereof
- Analytics or usage data
- Anything, really
2. Planning Center Online Integration
If you choose to connect Kairos to your Planning Center account:
- Authentication: You log in directly through Planning Center's secure OAuth system. We never see, store, or have access to your PCO password.
- Access Token: An authentication token is stored locally on your device to keep you logged in. This token only allows Kairos to read your setlist data.
- What We Access: Song titles, tempos, time signatures, and setlist order—just enough to load your setlists into the app.
- What We Don't Access: Your personal profile, team members, contact information, financials, or that embarrassing song you added to the setlist as a joke.
You can disconnect from Planning Center at any time in the app settings. This deletes the stored token from your device.
Planning Center has its own Privacy Policy governing how they handle your data. We encourage you to review it at planningcenter.com/privacy.
3. Bluetooth & Local Network
Kairos may request permission to use:
- Bluetooth: To connect to wireless MIDI devices. We use this solely to send MIDI clock signals to your gear. We don't scan for other devices, track your location, or do anything remotely creepy.
- Local Network: To enable Ableton Link, which allows tempo sync with other devices and apps on your local network. This communication happens directly between devices—we're not involved.
Both permissions are optional. The core click track works perfectly fine without them.
4. Data Sharing
We do not share your data with third parties because:
- We don't have your data
- See point 1
Seriously. No advertisers. No analytics companies. No shady data brokers. No "partners" who want to know your practice habits. Your tempo choices remain classified.
5. Data Retention
Your data lives on your device for as long as you want it there. Delete the app, and it's gone. We don't keep backups because, again, we don't have access to it in the first place.
6. Children's Privacy
Kairos does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Since we don't collect data from anyone, we're confident we're not collecting it from children either. If your kid wants to practice with a metronome, we think that's wonderful and none of our business.
7. Security
While we don't transmit or store your data on external servers, we take security seriously:
- Planning Center authentication uses industry-standard OAuth 2.0
- Login tokens are stored securely in your device's local storage
- All network communication uses HTTPS encryption
That said, please keep your device secure. We can't protect your setlists if you leave your phone unlocked at the coffee shop.
8. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal data. Since we don't collect personal data, these rights are essentially pre-fulfilled:
- Right to Access: Your data is on your device. Access granted.
- Right to Delete: Delete the app. Done.
- Right to Portability: It's already on your device. Take it wherever you want.
- Right to Opt-Out: There's nothing to opt out of, but we respect the energy.
9. California Residents (CCPA)
If you're a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act. However, since we don't sell personal information (or collect it, or share it, or even look at it), there's not much for us to disclose. But we support your rights, and if you have questions, please reach out.
10. European Users (GDPR)
For users in the European Economic Area, we want you to know:
- We process minimal data, and only on your device
- The legal basis for any processing is your consent (you chose to use the app) and legitimate interest (making the app work)
- No data is transferred outside your device
- You have all the rights afforded to you under GDPR, though exercising them is as simple as managing or deleting the app
11. Changes to This Policy
If we ever change this Privacy Policy (perhaps if we add features that require new considerations), we'll update the "Last Updated" date at the top. For significant changes, we'll try to provide notice through the app.
Realistically, though, our privacy philosophy is simple: your data is yours. We're just here to help you keep time.
12. Contact Us
Questions? Concerns? Want to report a bug or just say hi?
We read everything and respond to humans like humans.
TL;DR
- We don't collect your data
- We don't sell your data
- We don't share your data
- Everything stays on your device
- Planning Center integration is optional and uses their secure login
- Bluetooth and Local Network are optional and used only for MIDI/Link
- We just want to help you stay on beat
Thanks for using Kairos. Now go in good timing.
